Statecraft by Lady Thatcher, 2002
Britain and Europe - Time to renegotiate
.... It sometimes happens that almost overnight a course of action which has previously been dismissed as unthinkable becomes a matter of sheer commonsense.  I witnessed such a turnaround when as British Prime Minister after our 1979 election victory I led a government which up-ended Keynesian economic orthodoxy and substituted monetarist policies deemed unthinkable by the post-war political consensus.  Ronald Reagan as US President experienced much the same.  As he wryly put it, reflecting on America's economic renaissance: 'The best sign that our economic programme is working is that they didn't call it Reaganomics any more,'
I predict that it will eventually be the same with Europe.  That such an unnecessary and irrational project as building a European superstate was ever embarked upon will seem in future years to be perhaps the greatest folly of the modern era.  And that Britain, with her traditional strengths and global destiny, should ever have been part of it will appear a political error of historic magnitude.  There is, though still time to choose a different and better course.
I believe, therefore, that:

  • We in Britain should fundamentally reassess our relationship with the rest of the EU and renegotiate it in order to secure our national interests and sovereignty
  • We should not rule out any particular framework, as long as it meets our stated objectives
  • NAFTA seems likely to be the best trading association to join initially, given Britain's historic and continuing trans-Atlantic links, but other complementary free-trade arrangements may also emerge.
  • We trade globally, and we must think globally - not confined within the bounds of a narrow Europe
