Jan guilty of selling by the lb

The Sun

A WOMAN was yesterday found guilty of selling fruit and veg in pounds and ounces — despite the EU saying it should not be a criminal offence.

Market trader Janet Devers’ stall was raided days after Brussels said stallholders should not be charged for using imperial weights.

But the 2000 law banning non-metric measures is still on the UK’s statute books.

Mrs Devers, 64, got a conditional discharge at Thames Magistrates Court.

The mum-of-two was also convicted of selling peppers in bowls for £1 instead of by weight in Dalston, East London.

Mrs Devers must pay £4,890 costs.

She said she was a “scapegoat” — and feared her new criminal record may stop her visiting her daughter in the US.

Hackney Council, which brought the prosecution, said it was “satisfied” with the outcome.
