STALLHOLDER FIGHTS METRIC MEDDLERS

Daily Express
By David Pilditch

MARKET trader branded a criminal for selling vegetables in pounds and ounces yesterday launched a battle to clear her name.

Janet Devers, 64, was convicted of eight offences earlier this month for using imperial scales at her stall in Dalston, east London. Although she escaped a fine, the prosecution brought by Hackney Council left her with a bill for almost £15,000.

Yesterday Mrs Devers, from Wanstead, handed legal papers to Thames Magistrates Court.

She said: “I just want to clear my name. Pounds and ounces are part of the British way of life. Most of my customers are of the older generation and  don’t understand kilos.”

Mrs Devers faces three further charges and is due to stand trial at Snaresbrook Crown Court in January.
