METRIC MARTYR CASE DROPPED

Hackney Council has decided to drop its court case against a Dalston market trader for selling in pounds and ounces.

Janet Devers, 64, was due to stand trial next month at Snaresbrook Crown Court for selling fruit and vegetables at her stall in Ridley Road in imperial measurements.

However, the local authority announced this week it will not be pursuing the four remaining charges against Mrs Devers.

The market trader from Wanstead, east London, has already been fined £5,000 after being found guilty under separate counts of breaking the Weights and Measures Act in October.
