Christopher Booker's column
Telegraph
I must end this year by again paying tribute to my readers for the wonderful generosity with which they came to the aid of two causes. First their donations made it possible for the latest "metric martyr", the east London market trader Janet Devers, to fight Hackney council's vindictive decision to prosecute her on 13 criminal charges, ranging from selling in pounds and ounces to selling produce "by the bowl" (to avoid using weights her customers dislike and don't understand).

SAVED: THE GOOD OLD BRITISH PINT
Daily Express
By Alison Little Deputy Political Editor
THE British pint, mile and ounce were saved yesterday as Brussels finally quit trying to kill them off.
Shops and pubs can now keep to imperial measures after Eurocrats were forced to accept that the British would never “go the extra kilometre” or “pop out for a quick litre”.
Tory MEP Giles Chichester, who was closely involved with the process, said his party had saved the day “while the British Government was still trying to force metrication down our
throats”. He added: “The Government may be eager to scrap the pound as our currency but at least we have saved it as a measurement.”

Giving Them an Inch, and a Pint
The New York Times
The European Parliament voted to allow the continued use of the pint and the mile on Tuesday, sparing British drinkers from having to order half liters and Irish drivers from staying below 110 kilometers an hour. Before the measure passed, Britain and Ireland, the only European countries still widely using British imperial units of measurement, were required to set dates for scrapping them next year.

British measures win by a mile
The Scotsman
THE future of the mile and the pint of beer has been secured, after a government victory in removing EU legislation that would have required the UK to use litres and kilometres.
The opt-out agreed by the European Parliament will allow the continued use of the mile and pint indefinitely.

We can keep our pounds and ounces
Sunderland Echo
Metric Martyr supporters were celebrating today after Euro-MPs wrote the final chapter in the saga of Britain's battle to keep ounces, pints and miles.
Decades of wrangling between London and Brussels over switching to metric measures ended with a vote in Strasbourg confirming that imperial measures can carry on indefinitely.
The news will be welcomed by the so-called "Metric Martyrs" – food sellers prosecuted for refusing to stop using imperial measures, including the family of Southwick market trader Steven Thoburn.

Britain wins battle for the pint
BBC News
Amid the economic gloom, UK drinkers have found a measure of good news - the pint will not have to be renamed.
Decades of wrangling with the EU over switching to metric measures has ended with a vote confirming that imperial measures can carry on indefinitely.
The European Commission acknowledged last year that persuading the UK to embrace litres and kilometres over pints and miles was a lost cause.

Cheers to saving the British pint
BBC News
By Andy McFarlane
An agreement has been reached with the EU to allow Britain to keep measuring its roads in miles and serving beer in pints.
The decision put drinkers in one London pub in a celebratory mood, as BBC News found out.
In tough times, with recession looming and work hard to come by, Britons have always been able to seek solace in a quiet pint.

METRIC MARTYR CASE DROPPED
Hackney Gazette
Hackney Council has decided to drop its court case against a Dalston market trader for selling in pounds and ounces.
Janet Devers, 64, was due to stand trial next month at Snaresbrook Crown Court for selling fruit and vegetables at her stall in Ridley Road in imperial measurements.
However, the local authority announced this week it will not be pursuing the four remaining charges against Mrs Devers.
The market trader from Wanstead, east London, has already been fined £5,000 after being found guilty under separate counts of breaking the Weights and Measures Act in October.

You can’t beet the law, gardener told
The Journal
A LANDOWNER who sells surplus vegetables from his garden to passers-by was amazed when his tiny roadside enterprise sparked an official letter from weights and measures inspectors.
Businessman James Cookson, who owns Meldon Park Estate, west of Morpeth in Northumberland, says he makes “a few pounds” a week by selling the vegetables from a stall at the end of the driveway of his family’s rural mansion.

Metric Martyr wins battle over pounds and ounces market stall
Daily Telegraph
Janet Devers, 64, who runs a family stall, has learned that Hackney council will no longer pursue four criminal charges against her for using imperial measurements.
Mrs Devers had elected for a jury trial, due to start on January 12 at Snaresbrook crown court, because she wanted to be "judged by my peers".
