Metric martyr ditches appeal

A market trader today dropped her appeal against previous convictions for breaking the metric laws.
So-called metric martyr Janet Devers, 64, was last year found guilty of eight charges under the Weights and Measurements Act relating to the refusal to abandon imperial weighing scales on her fruit and vegetable store at Ridley Road Market in Dalston, east London.

Ms Devers was fined nearly £5,000 after being found guilty on eight counts of breaking the Weights and Measures Act in October last year.

A so-called metric martyr has spoken of her delight after charges accusing her of labelling the weight of groceries using the wrong measurement were dropped.
Market trader Janet Devers, 64, was charged with failing to price goods in metric.
She was due to stand trial at Snaresbrook Crown Court, east London, yesterday faced with four charges of failing to label groceries such as dates and sweetcorn in the metric system as well as selling by the bowl.

Last month the Guardian reported that the authority would not proceed as scheduled with their case this January against Ms Devers, of Colbrook Road, in the wake of overwhelming public pressure.

The case against a so-called metric martyr charged with failing to price goods in metric measures was dropped today.
Market trader Janet Devers, 64, from east London, was sentenced to a two-year conditional discharge last October after being convicted of eight charges under the Weights and Measures Act.
She opted for a further four charges to be sent for trial at Snaresbrook Crown Court.
The trial was due to start today but the prosecution offered no evidence against her, saying that it was "not in the public interest" to pursue the case.
